Sleep Disorders Center

St. Joseph Memorial Hospital Sleep Disorders Center in Murphysboro and Marion is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. This means that the center follows the highest guidelines to help ensure quality patient care and that the medical director is a board certified sleep medicine physician. It also allows the center to diagnose and treat over 80 different types of sleep disorders including disorders in children as young as age two.

The Sleep Medicine Team

Having accreditation means having a dynamic sleep medicine team. This includes:

  • Medical Director – a full-time, board certified sleep medicine physician reads and interprets all the sleep studies at the center. This physician also provides consults to sleep disorders patients. This physician sees patients at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital and Marion.
  • Polysomnographic technologists – Registered sleep study technologists and certified respiratory therapists who will prepare you for the sleep study and monitor you throughout the night.
Sleep Problems are Common

If you have a sleep problem, you are not alone. According to national studies, approximately six percent of the American population suffers from some type of sleep disorder. This may include insomnia (difficulty falling asleep), early awakening, disturbance of breathing patterns during sleep, loud snoring, sleep walking, abnormal muscle movements during sleep and many other conditions. If you suffer from a sleep disturbance, you or your sleep partner knows how this may affect your normal lifestyle. Sleep problems affect individuals of any age and occupation. A recent national poll indicated 40 percent of persons over the age of sixty experienced sleep problems.

Sleep problems are common and can be treated. If you think you have a sleep disorder, the first step is to tell your personal physician. If you have further questions, feel free to call the St. Joseph Memorial Sleep Disorders Center.

A Sleep Study or a Sleep Consultation?

The nature of the sleep disorder will determine whether you need a sleep study or evaluation by the sleep medicine specialist, both of which can be arranged at the St. Joseph Sleep Disorders Center. When faced with a sleep disorder, it is important to have open communication with your personal physician about your sleep. Tell him or her whether you sleep too much, too little or do unusual things in your sleep. If you have a sleep partner, take that person along to tell about your sleeping habits. Giving the best description of your symptoms helps your physician determine the best course of diagnosis and treatment.
