CPAP Clinics Make Breathing Even Easier

Medical equipment is of little help if a patient does not know how to use it properly.

That’s the whole reason behind the unique CPAP Solutions Clinic offered through the St. Joseph Sleep Disorders Centers in Murphysboro and Herrin.

Judy Elmore, sleep technician, has been conducting the one-on-one clinics since February of last year.

CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines are prescribed for most patients diagnosed with sleep apnea. This therapy provides a constant flow of air at a set pressure into the airway to ensure that the airway stays open through the night.

Elmore said patients come in to the sleep centers and undergo overnight testing, but when they get home with the equipment they may find it uncomfortable and not fitting correctly, which could result in leaking or excess pressure, causing discomfort. That leads to the patient becoming frustrated and possibly sending the machine back - or putting it in a closet.

But, thanks to the CPAP clinics, the center has as a higher compliance rating than other sleep centers.

She said it takes some patients a little longer than others to adapt to the CPAP. “We have to start out slowly.”

Not every clinic is the same. Elmore structures each one hour session to the individual’s needs.

It’s very important patients understand and are able to use their CPAP correctly, as their health is at issue. “There’s a direct correlation with sleep apnea and high blood pressure,” said Elmore.

Elmore sees patients by appointment on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Herrin and Fridays and Saturdays in Murphysboro.

Judging from the response of patients, Elmore said the clinics seem to make a lot of difference.

Anyone who is currently using CPAP and is having difficulty or experiencing any other sleep problems should call The Sleep Disorder Center at 888.38.SLEEP.

SJMH Sleep Disorders Center is the only center in the area accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. It’s programs, like the CPAP Solution Clinic that sets St. Joseph apart.
