The people of Southern Illinois Healthcare, a not-for-profit health care system, are dedicated to promoting the health and well being of all of the people in the communities we serve. Our mission is guided by our values: compassion, collaboration, quality, stewardship, integrity, accountability and respect. Over 2,000 employees, along with physicians and volunteers, are working together to achieve our mission and ensure that the health care needs of those we serve are met by treating patients in SIH facilities, by offering services in rural clinics, by collaborating with some of America's best hospitals and by improving the quality of life in our communities with our charitable community benefits programs.
SIH FACILITIES
Herrin Hospital, is a 104-bed acute care facility that has served patients since 1913.
In 2007, the hospital expanded with a $19 million addition that moved all outpatient services, including rehabilitation, wound care and imaging, to the main floor for better accessibility. The renovation included a 10’x20’ indoor pool for aquatic therapy and upgraded patient accommodations to include private rooms and flat-screen televisions.
The addition coincided with the installation of The Julia Harrison Bruce and Fred G. Harrison Memorial Garden. The half-million dollar healing garden is open to the public for relaxation and is also utilized by therapy patients for practice walking on its various surfaces.
Nationally acclaimed acute rehabilitation, treating both neurological and orthopedic patients, is provided through an alliance with the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
The hospital has a modern intensive care unit, surgical suites, and imaging services utilize digital technology including a film-less, digital picture archiving system (PACS).
As the first Accredited Chest Pain Center in southern Illinois, Herrin’s emergency department is able to stabilize and transfer heart attack victims to the cath lab in Carbondale in under 90 minutes – half the time it takes most hospital in the United States.
Memorial Hospital of Carbondale opened in 1959 and, with 132 beds, it is the largest SIH facility and serves southern Illinois as
a regional medical center.
It is home to Illinois’ largest and most spacious birthing center south of Springfield and more women choose to have their babies at Memorial than any other hospital in the region.
It is also home to the leading open heart surgery and cardiac care program in southern Illinois, with outcomes that exceed national standards. The high quality cardiac services are possible through an affiliation with the Prairie Heart Institute at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, a nationally recognized cardiac care provider.
The hospital is also home to a regional cancer treatment center, the only Level II-plus neonatal intensive care unit south of Springfield, and the only pediatric unit in southern Illinois. The hospital also features the area’s most advanced imaging center with a new, filmless, digital picture archiving network that makes all images made at the hospital instantly available on secure computers throughout the SIH system. The hospital is affiliated with Southern Illinois University's Medical School through its Family Practice Residency Program.
St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro, Illinois joined the SIH system in 1995 when it was purchased from the ASC Health System.
First opened in 1897 as St. Andrew’s Hospital, the Franciscan Sisters operated the facility for its first 58 years. In 1956, the Adorers of the Blood of Christ assumed operation of the hospital and, with the support of the community, built the present facility in 1960.
Although the hospital has changed over the years, its caring culture flourishes thanks to the continued hard work and dedication of the Sisters. Today, St. Joseph retains its Catholic identity and reputation as a “high touch” hospital.
The hospital recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Sisters with the dedication of a Labyrinth of Inspiration. The $40,000 garden and labyrinth now serve as a place of solace and peace as visitors are invited to walk the path in the wooded setting.
Today, St. Joseph is a 25-bed critical access hospital. In addition to serving the community as an inpatient facility for primary care, the hospital is home to several unique outpatient programs in the region, including the Center for Senior Renewal, the Sleep Disorders Center and a cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation program.
Despite its small size, St. Joseph also utilizes the latest in medical technology, including electronic medical records, automatic pharmacy dispensing and film-less picture archiving of patient imaging.
Physicians providing services at our hospitals are independent contractors with privileges to admit and care for patients at our hospitals.
